CHAPTER 7

"Kate. Thanks for coming so quickly."

Kate smiled as Jack's girlfriend ushered her into her office. You would never have thought it had been broken into a few weeks ago. Sabrina had done a great job of tidying and reorganizing everything. But then, that was Sabrina all over. You didn't become as good a lawyer as her without the ability to meticulously organize everything around you.

Kate didn't know Sabrina that well. She knew it was because of her old job. It was hard for Kate to get over the fact she had been so closely connected to both Mayor Suthers and Mason Richmond for so long. But she knew that if Jack loved her, then Sabrina had to be a good person.

"No problem. Have you heard from Jack this morning?"

"No. He didn't come home last night."

"Not at all?"

"Well, that's what I wanted to talk to you about." Sabrina wrang her hands. Kate couldn't recall ever seeing her so agitated. She'd always had that frustrating calm of most lawyers Kate had encountered. "When I came downstairs this morning, there were signs someone had been in the house. I thought it meant Jack had come in late, but when I went looking for him, I found that someone had taken his handgun and shotgun from the locker in the basement."

Kate stared. What the hell was Jack doing?

"His personal weapons?"

"Yes."

"Damnit, Jack."

"What's wrong?"

"This morning, I got to work to discover Jack had left his badge and gun on the captain's desk. If he's sneaking around like this and taking his own guns rather than his police-issued weapon…."

Sabrina's eyes widened. "You think he's found something?"

Kate lowered herself into one of the chairs. Before she could answer, her cell went off. A message from Jack. But rather than reassuring her, it made her blood run a little colder. "Damnit, Jack."

"What is it?"

Kate held up her phone. Jack's message consisted of a single address in Hollow Point. She had been hoping, foolishly, that perhaps Jack's dramatic resignation had been about something else entirely. But this proved exactly how stupid that hope had been. There could only be one reason for him to be arming himself and heading anywhere so close to where his daughter had gone missing.

"Does this address mean anything to you?"

"No," Sabrina replied, stepping closer to peer at the phone. "Do you think…?"

"Yesterday morning, Jack and I got a new lead on Hollow Point. A name. Dr. Schold. He went to Rosewood Methodist to follow up, and none of us have seen or heard from him since. He must have discovered something big enough that he's going in alone."

"My god, Kate, he can't."

"No. He won't…."

But before Kate could finish her sentence, there was a heavy knock at the office door. Kate looked up at Sabrina.

"Are you expecting anyone?"

Sabrina shook her head. But before she could speak, the door burst open, and two men stepped inside, each brandishing handguns that swept around the room.

"Get down!" Kate leaped forward, tackling Sabrina to the ground moments before the two men opened fire.
